Curriculum Overview 2017/18

A school that delivers an exciting and balanced curriculum that motivates the children and gives them an opportunity to discover the talents they have.” (School Vision 2016 – 2019)

The school follows the National Curriculum 2014 for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 but rather than teaching subjects in isolation, we make connections between the humanities and English to form topics. To ensure that the children have a good understandin of these different areas we have an assessment at the end of each topic.

Pupil Views

At St Christopher’s we take great notice of what the children say about school and ask them about it regularly, either through the school council or questionnaires. For instance, the children’s favourite subject is art so we try to encourage the use of art in other subjects. They also love visits and visitors in school therefore the teachers are always looking for opportunities to promote this (please see below).

Learning outside the classroom

Although school is a great place to learn, it is not always the most appropriate or effective venue. To support the development of children’s experiences as well as provide new and different contexts in which to learn, visits are organised in different year groups. There are very simple visits (local walks, swimming pools and our High school) through to more developed excursions (museums, outdoor pursuits, theatres and sporting arenas) all of which are used to ignite children’s fascination and provide experiences that would not be effective in any other way.

Visitors

Children love to learn from different and interesting people and so we ensure that there are opportunities for visitors to come to the school and work with children for various reasons. Experts in a range of fields will work with classes and groups of children to support lessons and take assemblies so that children understand that there are many people from who they can learn.

Health and Fitness

At St Christopher’s we feel that children cannot learn to their full potential without developing their health and fitness. All children in EYFS, KS1 and KS2 have two hours of P.E. a week. Children take part in a wide range of sports and KS1 and KS2 have special 15 minute fun fitness sessions in the afternoon. Our children are also given the opportunity to take part in sporting activities every lunchtime . A great many children in our school find that sport is a particular passion and we have various teams which compete in local competitions.

Clubs

To support children and further improve their love of learning we offer a variety of clubs throughout the year. All the clubs are delivered by external agencies and others are delivered by members of staff who are highly skilled in this area.
